BIG BOXES!!

We have been constructing a lot this week thanks to some giant boxes donated!
Some students were trying to attach a string to pull the box. Their first few attempts did not work so they kept trying different ideas until they came up with something that worked.

 Below is a "crazy carpet"...
 ...or drums...
 ...hide out...
 ...house...
 ... a dog house...
...and a fort.

Wednesday was Pink Shirt Day to show support for Anti-Bullying awareness.
In class we have been talking about being "Bucket Fillers" again, treating others how we want to be treated; with Respect!
We have also been learning how to stand up for our friends!

Baby Kade came to visit this week and he can do sooooo much!! Below are a few pictures of him trying to reach for a toy.
Ask your child how he gets around.

Math
Some students sorted these by object and colour on the light table. Ask your child to help sort your socks in the clean laundry!
Below we are in the process of changing our number wall. We have noticed students are using the number wall more and more so we decided to try making it more useable.

Students helped to create each number completed so far. They are adding ways to show a number such as: numbers, ten frames, tallies, pictures, number words, fingers and stickers.
We relocated the smaller numbers and words to the bottom of the word wall so they can still see numbers up to 20.
Ask your child how they can show a number between 1-10.
Below, students have been busy making garages for their cars and used stuffed animals to "guard" them.

Do you have blocks at home to build with? If not, keep your recyclables and see what your child can make! You can even tape the end of the boxes and make your own building blocks!

SNOW!

Snow finally came!
After the Family Day weekend we finally had a snow storm and the whole school took advantage of it to get outside and get some exercise.
We split into our stable groups to move around to different stations for snow activities.
 Building snow forts,...

 ...creating Snow Statues,...

... and sliding down the hill on crazy carpets!!

A lot of cooperation and team work happened that day!

This week we were also busy creating robots out of recyclables.

Some students created a structure of foam blocks. They found it wobbly so they tried different ideas to stabilize the base, then they could add to the "factory".

Other students started creating a wide road for the wide vehicle they were using. As they worked, they added much more and every time they were working on it, they changed something or made the structure into something new. One part even included "car couches"!

A few students found the stool with a magnifying glass in it. They went exploring around the room to find things they had not noticed before.

One of our activities this week was hanging mittens on a clothes line in numerical order.
How high can your child count independently?
Do they recognize numbers between 1-10, 10-20 or even up to 30?
How about out of order?
Can they print numbers correctly?

Pancakes, Storybook Characters, 100th Day and Valentines!

Wow,what a busy week!
We have been soooooo busy so take a look at this week- it's a long one!!

Tuesday was Pancake Day, we had a whole school pancake snack in the gym then read a story or two and tried some "Pancake Addition".

Wednesday was Dress as a Storybook Character Day. Below are Megan from "Pigs" and Princess Elizabeth from "The Paper Bag Princess"- both Robert Munsch stories. Most of the students in our class dressed up like a book character and some even brought their books for us to read!

Thursday was the 100th Day of School and students brought in a collection of 100 items for our counting activities- way to go everyone for making 10 groups of 10!

Some students were busy mixing up and then fixing the order of our 100 chart.

We split the class in half and did 2 activities at the same time. One group went to the computer lab to see what they could build with 100 snowballs....

...while others stayed in the classroom to see what kind of structure they could make with 100 cups of various sizes. Then the groups switched.

We counted to 100 by 1's, 10's and 5's and drew a picture of what we wish we had 100 of. We also made designs of different kinds of lines on a snake that is 100 cm long.

And then we danced to the 100 Days Up Town Funk song. What a day, so many activities!!

Friday was our Valentines Celebration.
Earlier in the week we made "chocolate" play dough and decorated bags for our Valentines.
We also made Rice Krispie hearts and enjoyed some other treats.
Attached to each bag when sent home was a purple paper with lots of ideas of what to do with a bag full of Valentines!

THANK YOU to ALL our volunteers that helped with pancakes, and parents who remembered to check their newsletters so their child didn't miss out on any of these activities! We appreciate you supporting your child's learning!
